Meet the Panel
Matt Dempsey, FTI Consulting
Matt Dempsey is a veteran of Colorado and national politics. He has spent most of his career focused on energy and environmental policy.
A Colorado native, Matt grew up in a mining family. He graduated from the University of Colorado where he studied political science and history. Following graduation, Matt worked on the successful reelection campaign for US Senator Wayne Allard. He then moved to Washington to serve on the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and in the personal office of U.S. Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.). As a communications director for the committee and for Sen. Inhofe, Matt built an award-winning online communications presence – using both traditional and emerging media platforms – on environment, energy, transportation and defense issues.
Since 2013, Matt has worked as a consultant to pro-energy groups, including Energy In Depth, Divestment Facts and is the opinion editor for the news reporting site Western Wire. In 2016, after more than a decade in Washington, D.C., Matt and his family returned to Colorado, where he is now based.
Michael Fields, Americans for Prosperity Foundation
Michael Fields currently serves as the Senior Director of Issue Education for Americans for Prosperity Foundation. Fields oversees long-term efforts that educate people on the policy issues that impact their lives. He has been with AFP for several years – previously, as the Colorado State Director, and brings years of educational, legislative, grassroots organizing, and nonprofit experience to the organization.
In addition to his work at AFP, Fields serves as President of the Board at a charter school in Aurora, CO where he previously taught—an experience which has made him see first-hand the benefits of furthering school choice and providing educational opportunity to students from all backgrounds.
Prior to joining Americans for Prosperity, Fields served as a policy aide at the Colorado State House and worked as a press aide for the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions under U.S. Senator Mike Enzi.
His experience also includes work on numerous campaigns at the local, state, and federal levels.
Fields attended college and played baseball at Valparaiso University and later earned his J.D. from the University of Colorado –Boulder. He lives in Denver with his wife, Mele, and their children, Malakai, Jericho, and Meilani.
David Flaherty, Magellan Strategies
David Flaherty is the CEO and founder of Magellan Strategies. His 26 years of work experience includes interviewing, studying and measuring the opinions and values of registered voters in Colorado and across the country. David is a public opinion pollster, voter data miner, campaign consultant and strategist.
He has been in the business of campaigns, politics, survey research, predictive data modeling and political data analysis since 1992. Prior to forming Magellan Strategies in Colorado at the end 2006, David worked in Washington DC for 14 years at the Republican National Committee, Americans for Prosperity, the US House of Representatives, and a government affairs firm.
David and the Magellan Strategies team have successfully managed candidate and referendum campaigns in Colorado for the past 13 years. His track record is impressive, winning referendum elections in Colorado Springs, Steamboat Springs, Edwards, Eagle, Aspen, Breckenridge, Gunnison and Eagle County. He has also work on successful projects in Lakewood and several special districts in Colorado. David is also a national Republican pollster working with Republican candidates and conservative organizations across the country.
His career path has taught him how to master the art of political data analysis, survey research, focus group research, and general campaign management. David is a 1991 graduate of the University of Delaware and resides in Broomfield, Colorado with his wife Jennifer and their two sons Jack and Bobby.
